The Azores use the euro. Carry a modest cash backup, check that your card works abroad and compare the actual total before confirming a purchase or withdrawal.

Make your visit work

  • Ask how you can pay before ordering or boarding, and keep enough backup cash for your planned day.

Will my card be accepted?

Ask before ordering. Banco de Portugal says businesses can choose whether to accept cards and which brands and types to take. Keep a small euro cash backup for your planned stops; a card accepted at your hotel does not establish the payment method at a café, market or bus.

What should I check at an ATM?

Read any withdrawal fee on the screen and check your own card provider’s tariff. If offered conversion into your home currency, compare the rate and charges; you can decline that conversion and withdraw euros. This does not make the withdrawal free. Plan your cash before a remote outing rather than relying on a particular machine.

How much should I budget?

Build the day from actual prices: the return journey, your chosen meal and any entry or tasting you want to book. Ask what the quoted total includes and check cancellation terms. Leave room for a changed return plan. An island-wide daily estimate is less useful than the current prices of the places you will actually visit.
