Make your visit work

  • Sleep near the Ponta Delgada seafront stops and plan every trip from its return column.

What does the bus network cover?

AzoresBus runs all 56 published São Miguel lines as one concession. Most start on the Ponta Delgada seafront, at the Alfândega, Marina, Piscinas or Forte de São Brás stops, and fan out along the south coast, the north coast and the west; Ribeira Grande’s terminal and Povoação are the two secondary hubs. 28 lines print a Sundays-and-holidays column and 28 do not, so the day of the week decides as much as the destination.

How do I get from the airport into Ponta Delgada?

No AzoresBus line prints a stop at the João Paulo II terminal. The “Antiga Aerogare” stop on lines 200, 202, 203, 205, 206 and N03 is the former terminal building inside the city, not the airport, and the AeroBus shuttle reported in 2019 could not be verified. Plan on a taxi from the terminal or a transfer booked ahead; the airport guide below sets out the fallback for a late landing.

Where should I stay without a car?

Ponta Delgada, within walking distance of the seafront stops: more lines call there than anywhere else, every day type included, and the night lines leave from the same avenue. Ribeira Grande is the honest second choice for the north coast. Furnas works for the hot pools and the lake but is the weakest base for the rest of the island. The where-to-stay guide counts the lines and the all-year returns for each town.

Which day trips have a printed return?

From Ponta Delgada, Lagoa (line 311) and Vila Franca do Campo (315) are the easy ones, with many weekday trips each way. Ribeira Grande (102), Furnas (110 along the north coast, 318 along the south), Mosteiros (206), Sete Cidades (205 on weekdays, 208 at weekends) and Nordeste (105) all have a printed return, but often only one or two in the afternoon. The day-trips guide ranks them by return risk; read the return column before the outward one.

Which beaches can I reach by bus?

The two city beaches have their own printed stops: Praia das Milícias in São Roque on lines 312, 314, 315 and 318, and Praia do Pópulo in Livramento on the same lines. Further along the south coast, Água d’Alto has a Praia stop on lines 315, 318 and N04, and Praia do Fogo at Ribeira Quente is the end of the short line 317 from Furnas. The beaches-by-bus guide lists every beach and pool with a stop, and the days each line runs.

What still needs a tour or a taxi?

Lagoa do Fogo has no printed stop on any line; the Vista do Rei viewpoint above Sete Cidades has none either, and is a climb from the village stop; the thermal sea pool at Ponta da Ferraria is a walk down from the Ginetes stops. The Salto do Prego trail at Faial da Terra was listed as temporarily closed on 14 October 2026. For these, a guided trip or a taxi is the honest answer, and this site does not publish taxi fares.

And the other eight islands?

This site holds the complete AzoresBus network for São Miguel only. For Terceira, Faial, Pico, Santa Maria, Graciosa, São Jorge, Flores and Corvo, the island pages list what each local operator publishes and link to it, and the ferry and flight guide covers the Atlânticoline crossings between them. Where an island page says nothing is published, nothing is: ask locally rather than trust a third-party timetable.
