São Miguel’s managed gardens and pools feel unlike its open Atlantic shore; Graciosa adds the Carapacho coast. Choose the setting before planning transport.
Make your visit work
- Check each manager’s current entry rules. At coastal Ferraria, respect sea conditions and local signs even when the water feels warm.
A garden in Furnas
Parque Terra Nostra pairs a botanical garden with a thermal pool in the Furnas valley. Leave time to walk the garden; consult the park itself for current admission and pool rules.
Forest pools on the Fogo slope
Caldeira Velha is a managed natural monument with warm pools and a waterfall on the north slope of the Fogo volcano. Check the Natural Parks booking page for availability, entry conditions and bathing rules before setting out.
Where heat meets the ocean
Ponta da Ferraria is a coastal thermal setting, exposed to the Atlantic. Its warm-water appeal does not remove the risk of surf or changing sea conditions. Obey signs and do not enter when local conditions advise against bathing.
Graciosa’s thermal coast
Carapacho brings Graciosa’s thermal tradition to the sea. Distinguish managed thermal facilities from the sea pools nearby; check the operator for access and the shore itself for bathing conditions.
A sensible day plan
Choose one thermal area and one nearby landscape, rather than assuming all four sites connect easily. Check admission, transport and the way back from the exact entrance. Follow each site’s bathing instructions.
What are the rules in the hot pools?
Terra Nostra, Poça da Dona Beija and Caldeira Velha all ask you to shower before and after bathing. Terra Nostra and Dona Beija forbid jumping or diving into the pools, glass and alcohol; Dona Beija also forbids soap in the pools and outdoor showers and makes swim diapers mandatory; Caldeira Velha and Dona Beija say not to open your eyes under the thermal water. Terra Nostra’s water is between 38 and 42 °C and iron-rich: it advises dark swimwear because the water can stain lighter fabrics.
Do I need to book, and can I cancel?
Poça da Dona Beija sells tickets online only and asks for the QR code at the entrance; a ticket allows 1 hour and 30 minutes, the site is open 08:30–23:00 with last entry at 21:30 and the pools cleared by 22:30, and no ticket is exchanged or refunded. Caldeira Velha is booked by date on the Natural Parks ticket page, where every purchase is final unless the managers close the site; its thermal pools are closed from 19 to 21 October 2026 inclusive for technical reasons. Book the bus return first, then the pool slot.
Who should not bathe in hot water?
Caldeira Velha and Poça da Dona Beija both say to avoid bathing if you are pregnant, debilitated, have had recent surgery or trauma, have an unhealed wound or suffer from any chronic illness. Terra Nostra advises against its pool for people with skin diseases, inflamed mucous membranes or open wounds, infectious diseases, angina, a recent heart attack, heart failure, aortic stenosis and high blood pressure, and asks pregnant women, immunosuppressed people and anyone with other or fragile health to consult a doctor first. Those are the venues’ own words; ask your doctor, not this guide.
