Luggage on São Miguel buses

AzoresBus publishes no luggage rule. What that means, and what the ferries and flights do publish.

Suitcases, pushchairs, bicycles and surfboards on the bus: the operator’s timetables, tariff feed and passes leaflet, read on 14 October 2026, say nothing about any of them. This guide says so instead of guessing, gives you the operator’s contacts to ask, and sets out the published allowances on the inter-island ferries and flights.

Make your visit work

  • Ask the driver before boarding with anything bigger than a daypack, and pack for the ferry’s two-bag allowance.

Does AzoresBus publish a luggage rule?

No. The line timetables, the tariff feed and the passes leaflet read on 14 October 2026 print nothing about luggage, pushchairs, bicycles or boards, no size or weight limit and no charge; the fares data this site uses lists “luggage or bicycle rules” among the things the operator does not publish. A single on-board fare for a named journey and the payment methods on board are unpublished too. Ask the driver before you board, or ask customer support on 296 097 097 or WhatsApp +351 916 060 760 the day before.

Can I bring a suitcase to a day-trip town and come back?

AzoresBus publishes no luggage rule, so this site cannot say; ask the operator on 296 097 097 or azoresbus.pt before you travel. The lines that matter for a change of base, 110 and 318 to Furnas, 102 to Ribeira Grande, 315 to Vila Franca do Campo, are ordinary buses with no printed luggage hold. Travel outside school-run columns if you can, keep the case where you can hold it, and have the return column for the new town read before you leave; the where-to-stay guide counts those returns.

What do the inter-island ferries allow?

Atlânticoline’s boarding page lists, under “No fees”, two pieces of checked luggage and one piece of hand luggage of at most 60 × 50 × 25 cm. Luggage of non-standard size may be charged at the Unaccompanied Baggage tariff and always depends on space on the vessel. Carry-on bags may not contain drinks or food, except for babies, children and the sick, and unaccompanied baggage has to be at the port 30 minutes before departure, passengers 10 minutes before.

And on flights between the islands?

SATA Air Açores publishes its checked-baggage rules on its own site, and they depend on the fare you booked, so read your booking rather than this page. Nothing on São Miguel connects a flight to a bus: no line prints a stop at the airport, so a bag that needs to reach the terminal travels by taxi or a transfer booked ahead whatever the airline allows.

Where can I leave my bags for the day?

Nowhere this site can vouch for. The two published AzoresBus ticket offices, in Ponta Delgada on the seafront avenue and at the Ribeira Grande bus terminal, are listed with addresses and opening days only, with no mention of left luggage, and the operator’s pages name no such service. Ask your accommodation to hold bags on arrival or departure day; for a cruise call, the ship is the locker.
