Make your visit work
- Pick a beach with a stop on a line that runs on your day, then check the flags at the water.
Which beaches near Ponta Delgada have a bus stop?
Praia das Milícias, the dark-sand beach in São Roque just east of the city, has its own printed stop, “S. Roque (Praia das Milícias)”, on lines 312, 314, 315 and 318 (315 and 318 also on Sundays). Praia do Pópulo, a little further east in Livramento, has “Livramento (Praia do Pópulo)” on lines 312, 314, 315 and 318 (315 and 318 also on Sundays). Both are on the south-coast lines that leave from the Ponta Delgada seafront, so a short ride each way.
Which beaches are further along the south coast?
Água d’Alto, the sheltered sandy beach between Água de Pau and Vila Franca do Campo, has a printed “Água d’Alto (Praia)” stop on lines 315, 318 and N04, all of them on Sundays too. Praia do Fogo, the warm-water beach below Furnas at Ribeira Quente, has its own stop on line 317, on Sundays from June to September only, the short shuttle from Furnas; reach Furnas first on line 110 or 318 and allow for the shuttle’s own columns, which include trips that run on school days or in summer only.
What about the north coast?
The long black-sand surf beach of Santa Bárbara, just east of Ribeira Grande, has a run of printed stops in the parish on lines 102, 103 and 111 (111 also on Sundays), with the Ribeira Grande terminal a short way back along the coast road. Porto Formoso, between Ribeira Grande and Maia, prints a “Caminho da Praia” stop for the small Praia dos Moinhos below the village on lines 105, 108 and 110 (105 and 110 also on Sundays), the Furnas and Nordeste lines along the north coast.
Which sea pools have a stop, and which do not?
The rocks and sea pools of Mosteiros, under the Sete Cidades crater, are at the end of line 206, also on Sundays, whose last printed stop is “Mosteiros (Banda de Além)”. The thermal sea pool at Ponta da Ferraria has no stop at all: the nearest are in Ginetes on lines 205 and 206, and the pool is a walk down from the parish. No line prints a stop at Caloura either, so it is not on this page.
Is it safe to swim, and how do I get back?
The Maritime Authority is responsible for bathing safety: follow the flags, the signs and the lifeguards where present, and check the IPMA warnings for sea agitation before you go. Then read the return column of your line for your day type before you leave the stop. Praia do Fogo depends on a shuttle with few trips, and the north-coast beaches on lines that thin out at weekends; the city beaches are the ones you can leave late.
