Counted from the AzoresBus line PDFs (in force on 14 October 2026): how many lines call at each town on weekdays and Sundays, how many all-year trips run back to Ponta Delgada and when the last one leaves. No hotel is recommended; the numbers decide.

  • Sleep where the lines start, then pick day trips by their printed return.

Why is Ponta Delgada the usual car-free base?

41 AzoresBus lines call in Ponta Delgada on weekdays and 24 on Sundays, more than any other town, and most of them start on the seafront at the Alfândega, Marina, Piscinas or Forte de São Brás stops. Staying within walking distance of those stops puts most day trips a short walk from where you sleep, and the night lines leave from there too. No AzoresBus line prints a stop at the airport, and the airport shuttle reported in 2019 could not be confirmed in any source we checked, so plan the first night’s arrival separately.

How do the other towns compare?

Ribeira Grande: 11 lines call on weekdays and 7 on Sundays; 27 all-year weekday trips and 12 Sunday trips run to Ponta Delgada, the last at 22:00 on weekdays and 22:00 on Sundays.

Lagoa: 9 lines call on weekdays and 6 on Sundays; 40 all-year weekday trips and 11 Sunday trips run to Ponta Delgada, the last at 22:28 on weekdays and 22:28 on Sundays.

Vila Franca do Campo: 4 lines call on weekdays and 4 on Sundays; 17 all-year weekday trips and 7 Sunday trips run to Ponta Delgada, the last at 22:15 on weekdays and 22:15 on Sundays.

Furnas: 5 lines call on weekdays and 3 on Sundays; 6 all-year weekday trips and 4 Sunday trips run to Ponta Delgada, the last at 17:10 on weekdays and 17:17 on Sundays.

Is Furnas a good base without a car?

For the hot pools and the lake, yes: they are in the valley. For the rest of the island it is the weakest of these bases: 6 all-year weekday trips and 4 on Sundays leave for Ponta Delgada, the last at 17:10 on weekdays. A night or two in Furnas works best as the end of a one-way trip, with the return to the city on the printed bus.
