Whale watching without a car

The boats leave from the Ponta Delgada marina, a short walk from the seafront bus stops. How to plan the day around a printed timetable.

Whale and dolphin boats are booked with an operator, not a bus line, and they leave from the Ponta Delgada marina, which the seafront stops serve: 35 lines carry the Marina stop. This guide says which stops are closest, how to fit a boat trip between an outward and a return column, what changes on a Sunday, and where the Horta boats leave from on Faial. Counted from the line PDFs in force on 14 October 2026.

Make your visit work

  • Book the boat first, then choose the return column that leaves after the operator’s stated trip length, with a margin.

Where do the boats leave from?

From the Ponta Delgada marina, a few minutes’ walk from the city gates, as the Ponta Delgada page on this site says. Each operator sets its own meeting point inside the marina and its own check-in rule, and that is printed on your booking, not on any bus timetable. Visit Azores publishes a list of whale-watching operators; whether a sailing goes out on the day is the operator’s decision, never this site’s.

Which bus stop is closest?

The Ponta Delgada seafront stops, with the number of lines whose stop list carries each one: Marina (35), Alfândega (42), Forte S. Brás (39), Piscinas (27). Most of the 56 lines begin or end on this stretch, so a bus from Ribeira Grande, Lagoa, Vila Franca or the west coast sets you down within walking distance of the marina. Each line page prints where its trips are timed, so check that the trip you want is timed at a seafront stop and not only at the hospital or the bus terminal.

How do I fit the boat between two buses?

Work backwards from the return. Take the trip length the operator states in the booking, add the walk and a margin for a sailing that comes back late, and only then pick the return column on the line page; the getting-back guide explains how to read it. Book the sailing before the outward bus, and check the operator’s own terms for weather cancellations: a bus trip chosen around a sailing that never ran is simply a day in Ponta Delgada.

What changes on a Sunday or a holiday?

28 of the 56 lines print a Sundays-and-holidays column and 28 do not, so a weekday plan may have no return on a Sunday. If you stay outside Ponta Delgada, check your line on the Sundays guide before booking a Sunday sailing; if you stay in the city, the boat is a walk and the day of the week does not matter.

And from Horta, on Faial?

The Horta page on this site says the boats leave from Horta’s own harbour, on the deep channel between Faial and Pico. The Faial island page lists what the local bus operator publishes and links to it; this site prints no departure times for Faial, so plan the harbour from the island page and the booking, not from a remembered timetable. The ferries guide covers the crossing to Pico.
