A meal can be a lovely part of an island day. Start with a local speciality, then ask about ingredients and preparation if you have dietary requirements.
Make your visit work
- Contact the restaurant before a special trip; explain your requirements and ask whether the kitchen can meet them.
What should I try?
In Furnas, ask about cozido das Furnas, the stew cooked using volcanic heat. Try São Jorge cheese or a Pico wine tasting to connect a meal with another island. Choose a named producer or restaurant and confirm the menu and any booking needed before making a dedicated journey.
Can I eat vegetarian or vegan?
Vegetable soup, a vegetable plate or fruit can be starting points for a conversation with the kitchen. Ask whether stock, butter, eggs or dairy are used; a vegetable dish is not automatically vegan. Arrange a suitable meal ahead and take a snack for an outing with few planned food stops.
What if I have an allergy or coeliac disease?
Explain the exact ingredient you must avoid and ask for allergen information before ordering. For coeliac disease, also ask about shared preparation surfaces, utensils and frying oil. An ingredient list alone does not resolve cross-contamination; confirm directly with the kitchen whether it can meet your requirements.
Is there a coeliac-certified place in the Azores?
The Portuguese Coeliac Association (APC) keeps a map of points of sale and APC/Biotrab certified establishments. On 14 October 2026 it listed four entries under the Azores: Longe da Espiga, a pastry shop and bakery at Rua Dr. Filipe da Cunha Álvares Cabral 5 in Ponta Delgada, and three shops (C-Natural Ponta Delgada, Mercado das Ervas Ponta Delgada and Bioforma Açores) that give members a discount on gluten-free products. The listing is the association’s; ask each place what it covers before you rely on it.
What must a restaurant tell me about gluten?
The APC explains that under Decree-Law 26/2016 establishments must have available the ingredients in each dish that can cause allergies or intolerances, gluten included, in writing, orally or another clear format. It warns that soups may contain stock, pre-made bases with gluten or pasta, that grilled bread can share a grill with meat, and that a non-certified bakery making gluten-free products alongside others is not suitable for coeliacs. Ask early, explain it is a medical need, and decide for yourself.
Are Azorean soups vegetarian?
Visit Azores describes the islands’ hearty soups as based on vegetables, including potatoes, cabbage, beans, turnips, carrots and pumpkin, and the same page puts beef, pork, sausages and dairy at the centre of the cooking. A vegetable base is not a vegan or vegetarian promise: the coeliac association notes that soups can be made with stock. This guide names no vegan venue because none we could read publishes its own statement; ask the kitchen, and carry food for remote bus days.
