The Azores invite long walks, sea swims and unfamiliar roads. Know where to check conditions and whom to call if plans change.
Make your visit work
- For immediate danger or an emergency, call 112. Save your location and the official contact links before heading somewhere remote.
At the sea
Follow the Maritime Authority’s beach-safety guidance, local flags and lifeguards. Ocean pools and warm coastal water remain exposed to changing sea conditions; check the IPMA warning before you travel.
On a trail
Check the official alert and map before leaving. Carry water and a charged phone, tell someone your route and expected return, and follow markers. The trail service warns that mobile coverage can be absent.
Personal belongings
The official trail safety advice says to lock a parked vehicle and leave no valuables visible. In towns and at busy viewpoints, keep essentials with you as you would on any trip. This guide makes no claim about local crime rates.
Non-emergency help
For a police station, search the PSP’s official locator by island and locality. For health advice, the regional civil-protection contact page lists Linha Saúde Açores. A tourism office can help with local visitor information.
If something happens
For an immediate emergency call 112. On a marked trail, note the last numbered post you passed; the official safety page says this helps responders locate you. If mobile signal is missing, move only as conditions safely allow.
