On São Miguel the return is the leg that fails. Many lines print one or two trips back in the afternoon, 28 of the 56 lines print no Sunday column, and the operator runs no fallback. This guide explains where AzoresBus publishes the last departure, how to read it, and what the honest options are when you miss it. No time is printed here on purpose: the dated line pages carry them.

Make your visit work

  • Read the return column for your day type before you board the outward bus, and save it where you can read it offline.

Where does AzoresBus publish the last bus?

In one PDF per line on azoresbus.pt, each printing its own effective date. Stops run down the rows and trips across the columns; each column is headed by a season and day-type code, so the last trip of your day type is the right-most column that carries its code, and the bottom row is the arrival at the end of the line, not a departure. This site’s line pages print the first and last departures of every day type from the PDFs in force on 14 October 2026, each block dated; when the operator issues a new edition, the pages change with it. Nothing on a stop pole is more current than the PDF.

How do I read the day-type columns?

The codes are the operator’s own: U is weekdays (dias úteis), S Saturdays, DF Sundays and public holidays, SDF weekends and holidays, and digits name single weekdays in the Portuguese way, 2 for Monday through 6 for Friday. The season letters matter just as much: A runs all year, E on school days only, FE in school holidays only, JS from June to September. A trip that appears only in an E column does not exist in August, and a weekend trip in a JS column does not exist in winter.

Why is the return the risky leg?

Because the return column is the one with no spare. Line 110 prints 2 all-year weekday returns from Furnas and 2 on a Sunday, so one missed afternoon bus is the whole day. Line 205 to Sete Cidades runs on weekdays only and ends one of its returns at Várzea, short of the city, where line 206 picks up. Nordeste on line 105 has 6 all-year weekday returns from a village three hours away. A cruise ship does not wait for any of them.

What if I miss the last bus?

AzoresBus publishes no replacement service and no on-demand fallback, so the options are the ones every town has: a taxi, which this site does not price, a bed for the night, or the next line that serves the corridor. The five night lines N01 to N05 leave from the Ponta Delgada seafront and reach some corridors late, but each has its own day-type columns; check them before counting on one. For the airport there is no bus at any hour, so a late flight means a taxi or a transfer booked ahead. Customer support is on 296 097 097 and WhatsApp +351 916 060 760.

A checklist before you leave the stop

Find the return trips headed with today’s day-type and season code, not the first columns on the page; read the departure in your stop’s row, not the bottom row. Note the printed stop name of your return, because some lines return from a different stop or end short of the city. Count the trips after the one you plan to take; if there is none, you are planning around the last bus. Check the day type of any shuttle you connect with. Save the column where you can read it without signal, and tell someone the time you expect to be back.
