Furnas by bus: two coasts, two lines, one valley
Furnas has more printed bus service than any other village outside the towns, because two long lines from Ponta Delgada reach it from opposite coasts and two short local lines link it to Povoação and to the beach at Ribeira Quente. The catch is that the two long lines stop at different places in the valley and print different day-type columns.
The short answer
Line 110 goes to Furnas along the north coast via Ribeira Grande and Maia: it leaves Ponta Delgada at 07:15 every day and at 15:00 on weekdays or 15:15 at weekends, reaching Furnas (Águas Quentes) at 08:45 and 16:45; it comes back from Águas Quentes at 09:10 and 17:10 every day of the week [source]. Line 318 goes along the south coast via Lagoa, Vila Franca do Campo and Ponta Garça and continues through the valley to Ribeira Quente and Povoação: on weekdays it leaves Ponta Delgada (Alfândega) at 09:00, 13:45 and 16:00 and is printed at Furnas (Largo Marquês da Praia) at 10:28, 15:03 and 17:28; on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays it leaves at 09:00 and 15:00 and is in the valley at 10:28 and 16:28 [source]. Two coasts, two arrival points
The 110 enters the valley from the north and ends at Furnas (Águas Quentes) after the Junta de Freguesia and Largo Marquês da Praia stops; its return starts at Águas Quentes and calls at Furnas (Caldeiras) five minutes later [source]. The 318 enters from the south, is printed at Furnas (Lagoa), Largo Marquês da Praia, Águas Quentes, Parque Terra Nostra, Polícia and Caldeiras, then leaves the valley for Ribeira Quente and the Povoação terminal [source]. Ribeira Quente and Povoação
Line 317 shuttles between Furnas (Largo Marquês da Praia) and Ribeira Quente (Travessa do Buraco) in twenty minutes: six weekday trips from 07:15 to 18:05, of which two run on school days only and one in June to September only, and two weekend trips at 09:40 and 18:05 that are printed for June to September only [source]. What goes wrong
The 110 prints only two trips each way per day, and its afternoon return leaves Águas Quentes at 17:10 whatever the day [source]. Cozido lunches by the lake and a Terra Nostra swim run to their own clock; the 318 return from Furnas (Polícia) at 16:19 on weekdays and 17:18 at weekends is the buffer, and on weekdays in school holidays a 318 leaves Polícia at 15:19 too [source]. Do not plan on the 319 for a return to Povoação unless the season code on the column matches the day: its returns are printed with school-day and school-holiday codes only [source].
Not reachable by bus
The Lagoa das Furnas caldeiras on the north shore of the lake, where the cozido pots are buried, have no printed stop of their own; the 318 prints Furnas (Lagoa) on the road below the village [source].
